Microsoft, Dell, Oracle, HP, Google, Amazon, Yahoo, GE, Reuters, Cisco, IBM, Intel – these are but some of the most illustrious names in Fortune’s list that have “rediscovered†India - this time, not only to be enthralled by its mystical beauty and lured by the warmth of its people, but to be amazed at the competence of this nation to cater to its new title, as “the world’s favorite IT hubâ€, for outsourced software and related services.
Where did it all begin?
Bangalore. Bangalore is India’s industrial city in the central southern part which comes with a fitting name: “Silicone Valley of Indiaâ€. Aptly called, Bangalore has opened new doors of opportunities for India, as myriad of global companies belonging to Fortune’s list, troop down to this vast country dominated by the world’s highest mountains, for their offshore needs of diverse technological talent and skills.
Offshore outsourcing to India has created thousands of jobs requiring technological and managerial expertise. Outsourcing companies have seen the potential of India as an outsourcing hub due to major reasons that dominate the equation, tipping off the scale in favor of India, regardless of opposing factors there may be.
When positives outweigh the negatives, the smell of success is definitely too difficult to ignore.
Why is India topping the charts as the favorite offshore outsourcing destination over its major rivals: the US, UK, Japan, Ireland and Brazil? A simple scorecard tells it all:
Education. India has acted proactively to the call of the times. Unlike its Asian neighbors, India capitalized heavily on the technological prowess of its people, having the foresight to acknowledge the emergence of a global potent force that will decide on how we live and do things: the IT industry. India can readily provide a vast supply of IT professionals at a much lower labor cost than its US or UK counterparts.
Government. India’s government manifested its support to IT education by heavily positioning its investments on infrastructure improvements related to telecommunications. Also, generous tax incentive- schemes never fail to attract more companies to outsource its services to India.
Expertise. India has an extensive pool of programming talent, at high levels of expertise, who are English proficient, and work on virtually 24/7.
Offshore outsourcing to India is an experience mutually beneficial for both the outsourcing company and the outsource provider.
As the outsourcing company is given access to highly specialized skills and knowledge, the outsource provider is given a “window†to assess its capabilities, and improve on them, to be able to maintain its competitive foothold in an industry that’s ever changing.
In India, the best is yet to come. As more and more companies are rediscovering it by its IT competence, India is ushered higher on the totem pole of IT prominence that the next time you speak about offshoring outsource services, a shorter word, with five letters will be mentioned to define it: India!
