There is a cause for concern fast emerging among clients outsourcing services to India. Members of their virtual team in India get younger by the day; in fact, youth has infiltrated even the middle-level management. Perceived inexperience which could tantamount to lack of leadership acumen, send ripple down every mogul’s spine.
Business Process Outsourcing has generated new blood into the arena long dominated by stalwarts in the business with a definite profile: middle 40s, MBA degree holders belonging to senior managerial level. With BPO’s entry, the profile was changed.
The outsourcing industry has reached its 4 billion-dollar mark in the recent years with India receiving the biggest share of the outsourcing pie. However, clients’ anxiety over the prospect of having inexperienced middle-level managers can negate this growth. India relies heavily on outsourcing, and a decline on demand in the coming years will surely hurt its economy.
Touted as an IT wonder, India boasts of highly-proficient English-speaking work force, far advanced and highly reliable telecommunications network, low labor cost with the second most extensive pool of IT professionals, in the world.
Barely a few years more, India will surely emerge as an IT giant, a big feat for a country dominated by the British Empire for nearly 200 years. The Indian government putting a stake on its own educational system has succeeded in creating a large reservoir of IT professionals who have the highest levels of competence compared with their western counterparts.
Today, India is the first choice of Fortune’s who’s who list, as their outsource provider.
Other favorable factors such as lower telecommunication rates, high bandwidth, and tax incentives for companies outsourcing services to India have stabilized India’s position in the outsourcing industry as its topmost player. IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, HP and Alcatel among other global companies with outsource services on software development to India could not have erred in their choice.
But the emergence of a younger workforce, now surfing its way into middle-management, and clients’ worry over the possible outcome should be taken seriously.
A less confident industry pulse has boomerang effect, and before an exodus happens, it is best to act proactively upon the dilemma and assuage all fears.
Better early, than sorry.
